About Maui Prime Fine Foods Long before proprietors Karin and Cary Button opened Maui Prime Fine Foods, this duo has played a part in the growth of Maui's culinary scene. In 1980, Cary Button, a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in New York, moved to Maui and began working as a chef in several of the island's well-known restaurants. Recognizing a need for chefs to supplement the island's fresh fish bounty with difficult-to-find cold water seafood, he established an importing business called Oyster Seafood. Maui restaurants and hotels were able to take advantage of the consistent quality of the pristine oysters and clams that Cary flew in fresh from his home state of Washington, and his business and reputation flourished. Mauians also know Karin and Cary as the owners of the former Fish & Game Brewing Company & Rotisserie - West Maui's first microbrewery. Maui Prime Fine Foods was established as the Buttons noticed there was a niche to be filled on Maui. With many gourmet foods and specialty food products difficult to procure on Maui, the Buttons decided to bring these products to food lovers at the retail level. They opened their gourmet market at Emerald Plaza in 2006. An expansive deli case features the seafood specialties that Oyster Seafood is known for. Meat selections in an adjacent case include a large array of of Snake River Farms' American-style Kobe beef, along with choices from the Pacific Northwest's Double R Ranch. Maui Prime also carries selections of local grass-fed beef from Maui Cattle Company - all free of antibiotics and growth hormones. A third case is well-stocked with a variety of imported and domestic cheeses, along with an array of tempting side dishes. The shop is also lined with pantry shelves offering up local dry rubs, spices, olive oils, vinegars, pastas, crackers, condiments and chocolates. An eclectic selection of fine wines fills the wine case. As part of the culinary team at Maui Prime, General Manager Will Hawkins, also a chef, keeps both the store and wholesale business running smoothly. Also attending to shoppers are Jason & Diane, who operate the shop from Tuesday to Saturday. Jason, a culinary school graduate and former chef, oversees the meat & seafood department, while Diane, a former pastry cook, assists shoppers with cheese selections and gourmet staples. Jason is also the creative force behind Maui Steamer Pots - the shop's seafood buckets that can be pre-ordered for events, special occasions, or just a get-together with friends or family. See our orders page for more details. Maui Prime Fine Foods is located in Emerald Plaza in Lahaina, and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. |
